I don't know how it is where you live, but in Australia, we are heavily preoccupied with Muslims these days. Every time an individual who is identified (by self or others) as 'Muslim', there follows days of public discussion and analysis, as to how the behaviour of the individual is or is not characteristic of 'being Muslim'. It is getting to the point that similar behaviours by other ethnic or religious groups in the community are minimised and the behaviour by the individual Muslim suddenly becomes representative of the entire community. The political mileage in this is enormous. Therefore, some Muslims in the local community (Melbourne) have a television programme on Community Television (Channel 31) called Salam Cafe (Mondays, 830 pm to 9 pm). This programme aims to break down stereotypes and it has attracted attention for its approach and its success. For those people living outside Melbourne and who want to know more about it, here are some links: salamcafe.com.au; tinyurl.com/ymwqgvAustralian Imam: tinyurl.com/ydg4zc The Green Guide in the issue of The Age newspaper (Thursday 26 October, p. 19) had a review of Salam Cafe for anyone interested in reading about it. The Age newspaper can be accessed on the internet: http://www.theage.com.au It would be good to know about other similar programmes elsewhere in the world that deal with breaking down stereotypes related to all aspects of identity (gender, sexuality, class, race, religion, ethnicity, disability and age to name a few ...)
