Fear of Finding the Needle in the Haystack: Library Anxiety in Marginalized Populations

This paper will discuss the importance of alleviating library anxiety in senior high students, particularly those from marginalized populations, in order to facilitate their success in higher education. A test/treat/retest methodology will be discussed in this presentation followed by a discussion of how the instruments used in this study were constructed and examples will be provided.

Much research has been done on the importance of students feeling comfortable in the environment of higher education in order to be successful in their academic careers. This presentation will explore the role of the library in meeting this need after students are enrolled in institutions of higher education. The programs that have been implemented by the library at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas will be the model for this. Not only will programs used in the classroom be discussed, the importance of having a welcoming library environment will also be discussed. The library at Southwestern University does a remarkable job of incorporating topics of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientation in their writer’s program. A brief outline of writers who were chosen to speak at this event over the last 12 years will also be presented.
